I had briefly mentioned at the meeting, but I have had a lot of luck
with avahi and mdns. I have my home router do dhcp, and the avahi stack
advertises itself and certain services on the network. As soon as I
connect, I can resolve my other hosts (I always found windows itself
seemed to have some variable delay in finding other windows hosts)

Aside from doing the local dns lookups, it allows for things like music
library sharing, printer sharing, advertising of ftp or other services.

On windows, one must install Apple's rendevouz/bonjour stack.

The issues I have noticed are the following:
1. On Windows, one must postfix hostnames with ".local". This does not
affect my linux machines or mac, as my dhcp server informs them that
they are part of domain "local". Windows does not seem to figure that
out.
2. If you are not using samba, I would think avahi is smaller then
running samba. If you are using samba already, then by all means, just
use that.
