[kwlug disc.] FLOSS Fund update

<sigh>
May I point out, at the end of the last meeting the instructions were given
to post nominations to the list. [I think this is the way to go in the sense
that the list is more interactive - a nominee request may generate some
resonance, feedback, or denials, that would otherwise not happen. The web
page being somewhat of a write once type of medium. Heck, I never used to
have any reason to go to kwlug.org, and now, even though RSS feeds from it
seem problematic, I tend not to go back until a feed slaps me upside the
head to remind me to go look. i.e. RSS is interrupt driven rather than the
usual polling.]
> So which project do we choose? How?
I thought this was settled. Having said that, I don't remember which it was.
It was either (a) show of hands for candidates at the meeting, or (b) the
fishbowl manglers autonomously choose which of the nominees they prefer.
It was my understanding that the results of the prior meeting's fishbowl
contributions would be announced at the next meeting.
Your basic initial point was to be contributing to something, _anything_,
worthwhile. Your basic point was everyone has good intentions of
contributing, but then frequently, innocently, fail to follow through. This
was to address that.
You walk in, you contribute to a 'something'. You don't know what that
something is, but you do know it's worthwhile (by the standards of your
peers, the other LUG members). Your contribution will go to something
worthwhile, and part of something being contributed to under the auspices of
the LUG. Not you, the individual.
It may not be your chosen project, and that is by design. (As I read the
list messages.) And partially intended to motivate the individual to more
effectively advocate for their favourite project to receive the fishbowl at
a future meeting.
Thus, your posting to the announce list would be in time for the following
meeting. The posting for the next meeting would be the list of nominees.
P.S. I would like to suggest this addendum ... at the meeting the manglers
randomly choose an audience member to join their ranks that month. If that
makes up an odd number of manglers, then a 2nd is chosen. We will trust the
manglers to choose wisely and gain the chosen's consent. i.e. Not their best
buddy, or at least not _every_ month, and not John, Richard, Paul, Charles,
recent presenters, or any other high-visibility people. i.e. Drag a lurker
into this small interactive involvement. [Usually the sucker, er, volunteer,
will just say "Whatever you guys want."]

Subject: [kwlug disc.] FLOSS Fund update
I think we might be able to start making contributions to the fund
for January's meeting. I think I can secure a "fishbowl" (which will be an
old chocolate-powder tin), and Andrew and Adam are anxiously waiting for
people to give them money. The big barrier for me is figuring out how to
select one of the nominated projects. So far we have:
0. Drupal (nominated by Chris B on the mailing list -- put this on the
website!)
1. The FSF (nominated by Chris B some time ago on the mailing list -- put
this on the website! I am sure they take donations but I have not
looked for the link yet.)
2. Trixbox.org (nominated by Unsolicited on the mailing list -- put this
on the website!)
3. Open Source Labs (nominated by me)
4. The Public Patent Foundation (nominated by Richard. He doesn't state
that they accept donations, but they have a PayPal link) 5. CLUE
(nominated by Richard, but I can't see whether they accept
donations or not)
6. openstreetmap.org (nominated by Richard. They appear to accept
donations via PayPal:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/OpenStreetMap:Site_support)
So which project do we choose? How?
We could choose this during the next meeting, but I would prefer
knowing the selection beforehand so we can announce it on the announce list.
