I don't know the full details, but they had an agreement with
MS to use some sort of remote protocol. Then MS soured up
on them and revoked a license or something like that, so they
became competitors.

It is GPL, unlike VMWare (some versions free of cost).

I use Xen for my host (VPS) and it is really good performance wise.
