amusingly, i was just looking at that earlier in the day.  but while
it's great for identifying wasted cycles, i was more interested in
tricks like the ones above, where you actually do something a little
off the beaten path to try to speed things up to save space.

i've known about XIP for a while but, with the cheapness of RAM these
days, i'm not convinced that it's all that useful anymore.  perhaps
once upon a time, but not now.  and, certainly, only in the context of
embedded systems, if even that.
