Do you see a /var/log/acpid file? This is kubuntu 7.04 so should
be similar to plain ubuntu in that regard.
Here is what I get in that log on a recent laptop, where the backlight
does go off on closing.
On closing the lid:
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:21 2007] notifying client 5321[0:0]
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:21 2007] executing action "/etc/acpi/lid.sh"
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:21 2007] BEGIN HANDLER MESSAGES
ERROR: Couldn't attach to DCOP server!
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:21 2007] END HANDLER MESSAGES
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:21 2007] action exited with status 1
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:21 2007] completed event "button/lid LID 00000080
00000003"
Opening the lid again
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:24 2007] received event "button/lid LID 00000080 00000004"
[Sun Aug 26 23:05:24 2007] notifying client 5157[106:110]
