Just in case ... any chance there's a BIOS setting that controls
suspend mode (or something similar) on lid close?

On an IBM with a dock I deliberately turn this off, since when you
open the lid, turn the laptop on, close the lid to use the external
monitor ... the laptop suspends ... powering down the external monitor ...
