I was going to say that maybe the laptop has a limited ACPI, but now
you mention this it has to be software, not BIOS.

Feisty (actually ALSA and/or kernel) broke some things for me too
(slmodem on Intel HDA sound card does not work, and I only found
out when I tried to use dialup when traveling).

I wish they go back to 2.EVEN = stable, and 2.ODD = development.
