No. I use both 3.5" and 2.5" enclosures. The 2.5 ones do not require
external
power. The one I have is called NexStar SX by Vantec. Works with Linux like
a charm. Also at CanadaComputers for around $20 taxes included, and comes
with a nice fake leather pouch, and standard camera USB cables work with it
(don't know the plug name, but it is the smaller one that fits cameras,
smart
phones, ...etc.), so if you have one of those, you don't need to carry
another one.
