[kwlug disc.] 2.5'' enclosures run off USB power?

I have a number of enclosures.
The 2.5" ones never take a second cord for power. Some may include a
USB splitter so it draws power from a second connector. All in one
cord. So, only one into the device, but one, and optionally two, into
the computer.
This can be problematic in that USB will only put out so much power,
so if you have enough USB devices connected, something will suffer. I
don't recall ever needing the power connector of the 2.5".
e.g. A webcam takes a lot of bandwidth, while mice, memory card
readers and so on do not. Drives will be more worried about power -
speed will just vary according to the burstiness of other devices.
And nothing says you have to have every USB peripheral you own
connected 24x7.
I have had no good experience with IEEE / firewire devices, if that's
even an option for you.
It may not be relevant for the Eee PC, but does anyone have experience
with eSata? I'm getting irritated at how slow external USB (3.5")
drives are.
