[kwlug disc.] Networking problems

Hi everyone,

I have a really old laptop - a Compaq Armada 1530DM if that means anything to 
you.  Right now it has DamnSmallLinux installed.

My problem is that I can't get it to talk to anything else on the network.  I 
have a Dell branded 3Com PCMCIA wired NIC, model 3CCFE575BT-D, which I have 
had problems with in the past.  Sometimes I would have to start with it 
unplugged, only plugging it in after booting, in order for it to work 
properly.

Right now, when I boot the NIC is not automatically set up.  So I do the 
following:

1. sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.97
2. sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1 metric 1

If I then run `route`, the output is:
Destination	Gateway		Genmask			Flags	Metric	Ref	Use	Iface
192.168.1.0	*			255.255.255.0		U     		0      	0	0 	eth0
default		192.168.1.1     0.0.0.0			UG		0		0	0 	eth0

which is the same as on other working machines on the same network.  At this 
point, I can ping 192.168.1.97, but nothing else.  Suggestions for where to 
look next would be much appreciated.
