I'm pained to say it but slackware just doesn't cut it in that department 
either.  :-)

Seriously though, I've been using Kubuntu on both my desktop and laptop for 
the last several months and have been by and large very very happy with it.  
I'm not a Gnome fan, but Ubuntu/Kubuntu would get my vote for an "everyday" 
distro that just plain works.
