A simple Google search turns up this page 
http://www.mepis.org/node/5340, which suggests that these may not be as 
rare a breed as you suggest.

That said, I think this info might be out of date for MP3 support at 
least, since Fraunhofer started getting their shorts in a knot regarding 
their patent on the MP3 algorithm.
