[kwlug disc.] best distro for "out of the box" home system?

All the 5 desktops at home run Kubuntu. They are 2 laptops, and 3
desksides.  Some have Feisty (7.04), some have Gutsy (7.10).

The server runs Ubuntu Server (AMD 64 version).

So, this is another vote for Kubuntu on the desktop. Try it, it is good.
