Let's face it, nothing is simple enough for that kind
of people. I think that trying to convince them is
misguided. For them is 100% better to have someone
install the OS, install applications when required,
configure the network and give them step by step
instructions to do what they want to do.
In my case, they could make kniting very simple and I
would still buy my sweaters at the store (or wait for
my mom to knit me one)

Totally agree. If you don't want to change your car's
oil (regardless of how easy it may or may not be) you
take it to the garage. Why do we sometimes think that
spending money will push people away?
The advantages of Open source are many. That it is
Free as in beer is just one of them. The other
advantages are still there even if you decide to pay
for the service.
