[kwlug disc.] best distro for "out of the box" home system?

I was having 'complications' running debian on my laptop (dell) installed xubuntu and everything just worked.  It was slow though so next I tried archLinux.  Nothing is quite out of the box, you have to add daemons and modules and what not  manually to a rc.conf file and it requires some other file editing but everything also just worked.  Once I installed it that is.  I am really starting to hate the huge 'download in the middle of the install' having only internet access at work.
