One really impressive up and comer worth checking out is Istanbul. You can 
find it at http://live.gnome.org/Istanbul . The latest version even has 
sound, which is kind of handy. Videos are saved in Ogg Theora format. If you 
are curious as to what it can do, check out this little video I created.

In case you are curious, I'm playing with some ideas for Linux (and open 
source software in general) videos that can reach a wider audience than my 
appearances on G4TechTV's Call for Help (which is way cool, but is only 
available on some pay channels in a handful of countries).

The portion of the video that covers Liquid Weather was done using Istanbul. 
The flashing covers at the beginning were done with KdenLive as was the 
whole 'assembly of the video. My own introduction was recorded using my Sony 
Handicam DCR HC-40.
