If you disable comments overall does it disable comments for
individual entries?
I was thinking that one solution to this problem would be for us
to volunteer a moderator who would enforce some set of the following
policies:
- Approve registrations to the Drupal site
- Moderate the first few comments that people make to ensure that
they are not porn links (or at least that they are good porn links).

Crazy suggestion: disable forums. There are some good questions
being asked right now (one person needs help in upgrading Ubuntu from
Dapper to Breezy) and they are mostly going unanswered.
Meanwhile we can keep blogs.
