[kwlug disc.] panic, do_resume problem

I'm stuck trying to get a new kernel working with knopmyth.
It won't boot, and gives the error message
linuxrc: cannot create /sys/power/suspend2/do_resume: directory non-existant

I used the old config file from 2.6.18 (from knopmyth) which works fine. 
  And updated it with make oldconfig.
I need a wifi driver that will hopefully work with this version of kernel.

When I boot with the old config the above directory is present.
When I boot with knoppix, the above directory is missing, adding it in 
though made no difference.

Any ideas?
