Thus spake Chris Bruner (cbruner at quadro.net) [28/02/07 01:01]:
: >: What flavor of Linux?
: >
: >Gentoo, kernel version 2.6.19.
:
: I use Gentoo, and http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml has worked
: for me.

That's what I used to get it going (well, referred to, anyhow).

: I just tried alsaconf and it turned off all my sound, and I had to
: reboot to get back to normal.

Hum. A reboot shouldn't be required, but I'll give it a shot (once
OpenOffice finishes installing, anyhow).

: In the past I used alsamixer to unmute channels.

I've got the channels unmuted, and volumes set to what should be
ear-splitting levels. There's only a few things I can think of that I'm
doing wrong: I've got ALSA compiled into the kernel, but the card-specific
drivers are modules. (I've already got a kernel prepped where all of the
audio subsystem is modules.) I've also not enabled any OSS emulation, and
I've disabled support for the old ALSA protocol.

When I load the modules, I can hear the 'crack-thump' come down the line, so
they're working; I'm just not getting any sound.
