I need a wiki with the following features:
0. Reasonable syntax (Markdown would be good but it certainly is
not necessary. The ability to have multiple levels of bullet lists and
good whitespace would be nice). Non-techies need to use this.
1. Stable and supported and reasonably secure, with a reasonable
userbase
2. Reasonably easy to keep up to date
3. Good access control (really, I want to lock this thing down to
only a few users, but those users may access the wiki from anywhere on
the Internet)
4. Written in some sane, easy-to-install language
5. Revisions
6. Good email notifications that indicate what the most recent
changes are
7. Open source
We have been using TWiki, which is good for 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 okay but
not great for 6, and aggravating for 0 and 2. I know that wikimatrix.org
exists, but it is not that helpful because 3 is a must-have and the matrix
does not list this feature. Also there are seven billion wikis in
existence (yes, more than one per human alive on the planet) and figuring
out the set of good ones is a pain.
Do any of you have locked down internal wikis you are happy with?
If so, what do you use?
I was looking at MediaWiki but after skimming through the
documentation it looks like access control is a pain. I do like TWiki's
concepts of groups.
