Yes.  Mapping parties are common in UK where OSM started.  One is
coming soon to Southern Ontario.  I have no idea who is behind this.

Ayr[1], Ontario was about six hours of mapping, Breslau[2], Ontario
was about two hours.  The UK county Isle of Wight was about a weeks
work by a few dozen volunteers.  All of UK will be complete in 2008.

Walkers, cyclists and horseback riders can also contribute.  Sometimes
a car gets in the way of collecting data.  Here is a great
special-purpose map (showing recycling facilities) of a University
campus in UK[3]
