I'm definitely out of touch with that stuff too... my recollection/
understanding is that the "modern hardware" you are probably thinking
of is the "A1" motherboard, which was pretty much a standard modern
motherboard based on a G3 chip, custom BIOS, and no operating system
(eg: AmigaOS 4.x that was supposed to run on it wasn't simultaneously
available with the hardware)

The A1 was just a stand-alone motherboard -- not a complete working
system, and without an OS, at $800, it didn't really seem all that
attractive. (I recall looking at it when it was announced, and
thinking something like "uh.... no").

My recollection is pretty hazy -- I haven't given any of that even a
single thought in some time. I miss retro-computing, but have too
many modern computing things to get done right now :)

I wonder if the term "neo-luddite" has been coined yet?* You know,
someone who loves gadgets, gear, technology -- but only of a
particular niche or era. Who looks at all the modern wizbang solid
material 3-D displays kids are using nowadays and says "Fah! You can
keep that junk -- I've got twm running on Linux 2.4 on this bad boy,
and it'll kick your A$$. You kids get off my lawn!".

* Obviously, yes, it has. It's way too obvious to not already be
part of language. The Wikipedia article on it makes reference to a
social orientation that's sounds like just *way*to*much*fun* -- yep,
"anarcho-primitivists". And you thought your luddite parents gave
you a hard time about your C64/Apple ][e/whatever addiction -- ha!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarcho-primitivism (doesn't sound
there's any social movement behind trying to *live* this as a
"lifestyle", but it's fun to imagine)
