Can you post your xorg.conf file? I'm just curious what is set in there 
to give you a screen size larger than the display size.

With both nvidia (using proprietary driver) and intel (using intel 
mode-setting driver) graphics cards (desktop & laptop, respectively), I 
do not fill out any resolution or size information in the xorg.conf 
file, opting instead to have xorg probe for the proper settings. When I 
got my flat panel, I plugged it in and got native resolution straight away.
