i couldn't at the time, since my laptop didn't have a functioning,
built-in network port, and my net PCMCIA card was elsewhere.  grrrr.
i *really* wanted that PCMCIA card, since that would have told me a
lot.

as soon as i get there tomorrow, i'm turning off the router
entirely, and plugging my laptop directly into the cable modem, of
course.  then it's just the process of elimination.
