Not quite the same thing.

This is closer to a USB phone, except ... you can plug your own phone in.

Such as a multi-handset cordless phone.

Eliminating the need for an ATA.

Not saying there aren't advantages to dedicated hardware, just that
this ($20?) is a lower entry level to the functionality.

e.g. Probably a great Xmas gift. Particularly if the giftee has an old
clunker phone lying around.
