This is an interesting discussion, because most of this has never
occured to me! I use Gmail for any maillinglist subscription that I
have, and it's done some sneaky things to my mailling habits. For
example, the features that I find handy in Gmail are:
1 All messages on the same subject are threaded together like a conversation
1.1 Gmail automatically collapses messages that you've already read,
so when you open up the thread again, it takes you to the latest
message
2 Quotes are automatically collapsed into a "- show quoted text -"
when they are at the bottom of the a message.
Since all quotes at the bottom of messages are turned into one little
line, I've rarely seen the:

at the bottom of every message, nor do I notice when people top post.
I assme this is because Gmail is one of those mail applications that
quotes the entire contents of whatever message you are replying to,
and places your cursor on top of the stack of quoted text. So maybe
Gmail is trying to make it easy for me, even when "rude" people top
post a leave a very fatty quote under their two line message, because
I never even notice...
So when all this hubub about top posting showed up, I was caught
completely off guard! Partly because I'd never heard of it before, and
mostly because I'd never even *seen* it before. I guess it just goes
to show that a little ignorance, and your choice of email client can
go a long way to warping your own net-manners.
I also agree that changing the topic is perfectly acceptable, in fact
I plan on doing just that very soon...
