I keep my "archived" emails in a sub-folder that I just don't look at.
I then use the quickfile extension[1] to move emails to any arbitrary
destination in my silly chain of folder and sub-folders.
I then forget about the emails. They've been sorted well enough that
it's easy to find emails later.
Gmail's philosophy is completely backwards. Spend 1/2 a second to
sort it properly, and then searching is a reasonable experience when
done 10 years later..
