[kwlug disc.] Missing ram and other questions.

So I've got Mr. Dell Laptop running up and fine and dualbooting and doing mostly what it should.  However, its only saying that I have 1gb of ram, not 2.  (I've never had more then 256mb in a computer before so I am sort of attached to it, whether I really NEED it.)  
Windows says I have a 2, but it also says the video card is twice as big as linux does so, what I am wondering is.  Is this the way things are going to be?  Or is there something I need/can do to find my other 1gb.  I am not so worried about the video.  Or(new thought, I've been up all night baking bread and should probably write this when I am a little big more coherent) is it because of the dual core dealie?  /proc/cpuinfo tells me I have only one cpu.  So did I just lose the second core.  
Also is there a frontend or what not for managing wireless connections or am I stuck using iwthisandthat.
