[kwlug disc.] "people don't respect what they don't pay for"

Lots of good replies so far. Raul's reply is a much more polite version of
one that I've used
when faced with the throwaway lines, "You get what you pay for", "nobody
respects what they get for free", or "nobody wants a free puppy." I respond
with a throwaway line, "because the love you can buy from a professional, .
. ." and leave the question hanging for them to follow.
But the truth is that we, as good LUG-gers and community members DO pay for
our software. We pay by writing documentation, submitting patches, writing
code, testing, training others, donating to projects, contributing to
completely different projects, and on and on. With Free Software we can
repay in the currency of our choice according to our ability and inclination
to pay. Even those who only use the software are contributing by reducing
the number of folks using bad, insecure, proprietary-standards-laden
software.
