Pardon my ignorance, but what is 'smarthosting'?
Or more particularly, what is 'smarthosting' accomplishing for you in
your instance?
If I read your message correctly, you have an internal mail server.
Your internal server sends / retrieves all mail from the smarthost
mail server, which servers as your 'public' data / connection entry /
dispatch point?
Along the way this public entry point is providing some spam / virus
/ etc. facilities?
Would you accomplish the same thing with postini?
