Well, I do think there is some potential benefit: it makes it harder
for spammers to send out mail via smarthosts. Having said that, I
agree that they structured the policy to "encourage" customers to pay
Rogers money to get their e-mail hosted (only $5 to 20/month per
user!).
On the other hand, if you are running Exim (and probably other
configurable mailservers) then you can probably dance around this
limitation by choosing a smarthost account based on the sender's
e-mail address. Thankfully I did not have to figure out the details of
how to implement this, though.
