I've gotten as far as loading the drives under Linux. It is OS
transparent, it's all hardware. IDE drives are IDE drives. Sata drives
are Sata drives. My 7.10 kubuntu just sees them. Not sure about hot
disconnect. Just need a Sata connector on the motherboard. In my case
I purchased PCI connector Sata cards (from Canada Computers).

Enclosure's aren't atypically both eSata and USB (and IEEE) capable.
