I don't have to be kidding you.  I followed the suggested tests on a
couple of machines.  Each is a fairly vanilla installation and has other
stuff going on at the same time including vpn.  The hour surprises me in
light of your comments.  Perhaps I have a problem with the 3G of memory
or my configuration could use a few tweaks.
