My high-level understanding is that it uses ssh and X forwarding as you 
are attempting, but does some fancy caching and compression to speed 
things up significantly.

I'm hoping that I can do a short overview if we have a 'all about remote 
access' meeting.

Yes, as Jason mentioned.  One thing to be aware of, particularly in your 
scenario.  Last I checked, the Windows NX server was not free software 
(in any sense of the word free).
