This will be the toughest part. 64MB RAM is a significant bottleneck.

Definitely net install (if you have the bandwidth). I dislike media
installs quite a bit.
The install should be fairly straightforward. One gotcha is that when
you are asked whether to install software sets, you want to leave the
"Desktop Environment" unchecked (it will install GNOME if you check
it), but if there is an X-Window option, check that.
If you don't have X after installing, the easiest way to get it and
the Synaptic graphical package manager is to type the following:
aptitude install xorg icewm synaptic
(I prefer aptitude over apt-get because it was better for marking
dependencies in the stable release. I hear this has changed for the
testing release, though.)
