I think some of the problems stem from the kernel that is included
with the stable Debian install CDs (I used netinst, as I much prefer
the network install, like Paul).

I had issues installing on a Thinkpad 600x, which is not a new machine
by any stretch of the imagination, but once I was able to compile my
own recent 2.6.23+ kernel, it works like a dream.

To Richard:  I'm a fluxbox fan... on the Debian system here at NetDirect,
it is using about 4.5megs of resident memory, according to top.  Older
versions of fluxbox were even smaller.
