Once upon a time, I installed Debian on a Pentium 133 Toshiba Tecra. Eeven
at the time, this was way old tech. but I was at UW and had no extra cash.
The one trick I used that turned out really well was to compile a custom
kernel on my desktop machine, package it into a .DEB (not hard to do,
actually it's pretty easy with the right tools), and install it on the
laptop. This got around all kinds of driver and performance issues right
off the bat.

Otherwise, all of the advice here is good. Do a netinstall since you won't
need too many packages, don't install the "Desktop Environment", install
only the packages you need, and use IceWM or FluxBox and you'll be set.

Good luck!
