Good news.

I was able to get the printer AND scanner working again on Kubuntu 8.04 as a
print server.

My daughter need to scan something and did the usual thing (booting in Linux
and using Kooka to scan), and it worked. This confirmed to me that USB and
the printer itself is not the issue.

I copied the /etc/cups/ppd/printer1.ppd from my laptop to the print server
and all is working fine again.

No OpenWRT for me for a while then ...
