In my experience RAM is usually more of a bottleneck than CPU speed,
especially for desktop linux. Firef^H^H^H^H^HIceweasel and OpenOffice
alone suck memory like an SUV at the gas station.

Agreed. As with everything else, software bloat is also a factor. In
the good old days barebones X would run pretty well on 32MB of RAM;
now even 64MB might be taxing it.
