You're right, I'm comparing apples to applesauce.  The Vista laptop 
came pre-configured, although I've done a Vista re-install from the OEM 
media, which has all the hardware preconfigured.

Mind you, I've never had this degree of difficultly with other Windows 
OSes on other hardwar.  Of course, proprietary drivers are readily 
available for those.  No ideological principles involved.

Another laptop, vintage 1999, has a different set of Ubuntu problems, 
but no Vista will ever sully its hard drive.
