Thus spake Khalid Baheyeldin (kb at 2bits.com) [05/02/08 16:07]:
: Several years back, they used to have issues, normally on Saturdays for a
: couple
: of hours. But for the last two years they have been very stable. They also
: replaced
: the cable modem to be able to sell VoIP to their customers, and upped the
: speed of
: the connection for free.

A word of caution:

The modems they're replacing right now are done to facilitate their
filtering and QoS plans. Up until recently, they deployed filtering in
their cores, using a very expensive product. With these new modems, they'll
be able to do things like traffic shape your bittorrent traffic right in
your modem. This is cheaper and more effective, and means the spotty
filtering we've seen to date will likely be much more widespread.

NB: I'm not saying they /will/ do this, but that the new modems will /allow/
Rogers to do this.

That being said, they are open to you purchasing your /own/ modem, and
deploying it. I've known a couple of people who have gone this route, and
they have zero issues with the service (though getting the modem authorized
on the network was a bit of a pain).
